About Us

This website is being developed under project "Advancing the Process of Reconciliation in Former Yugoslavia" granted by National Endowment for Democracy and organized by Centre for the Study of Religion, Politics and Society, Novi Sad, Serbia

Bearing in mind the role of Churches and religious communities in the reconciliation process and the attitude towards the past, one should highlight the fact that longstanding and thorough reconciliation among the nations on the territory of the Balkans is not possible without the active participation and consensus of the religions, which played a significant role in the creation of religious and national identities. Starting with the fundamental thesis proposed by the renowned Catholic priest and theologian, Hans Küng, that there can be “no peace among the nations without peace among the religions”, it becomes clear that religious institutions must be more involved with the process of reconciliation in the Balkans. The conflicts in the former Yugoslavia need not be described as religious, yet one should emphasize that religions did play a certain role in the creation of national tensions, in the sense of raising religious and national awareness. Although the conflicts were essentially of a political nature, the presence of religious feeling did, however, serve as some sort of the conflict catalyst.

Considering the role that Churches and religions had in Truth and Reconciliation commissions worldwide and their importance and influence in countries of former Yugoslavia, it is very important to include them into regional process of transitional justice. On the other hand, their involvement in process of transitional justice is very important because of their cultural relevance and large peacekeeping capacity that religions have. It is our deepest conviction that reconciliation process in former Yugoslavia is not possible without strong and active support from Churches and Religions.

The questions and issues to be addressed in the website are the following: How can religion contribute to reconciliation, transitional justice, dealing with the past and how is it related to extremism, nationalism and conflicts? How can religion address LGBT rights and issues? How can religion contribute to the European integration process and democracy development in transitional societies like countries of Former Yugoslavia? How does religion affect socio – political reality and what are contemporary social phenomena related with religion like? What is the relationship between theology and socio – political theories, economy, ethics and social sciences in general? What are the relations between religion and culture?
